以美国与日本文化对比为主题的警匪动作片。迈克尔·道格拉斯和安迪·加西亚饰演纽约警探，负责押解日本黑社会头子松田优作回国受审，不料在大坂机场交人时被歹徒调包劫走人犯。两人留下来协助当地警官高仓健追捕松田，在凯特卡普兰开设的夜总会中找到线索，但安迪惨遭日本黑帮惨杀街头殉职。迈可尔忍无可忍，决定跟高仓健携手直捣戒备森严的匪窝。导演里德利·斯科特以凌厉的映象和激烈的动作场面来包装本片，气氛别致，迥异于一般在美国本土拍摄的警匪片。美日两大巨星也分别演出了两国刑警的不同思考方式和办案文化，使两人的感情进展显得迂回曲折，别有味道。
