根据当时的纪录，Francis Ouimet是一个被特别许可参加1913年美国高尔夫公开赛的业余选手，带着一个10岁大的小球童，却击败了当时极负盛名的英国选手Harry Vardon。当时的英方俱乐部和媒体给了Harry Vardon很大的压力，对这个美国奖杯是势在必得，结果却败给了名不见经传的Francis Ouimet，成为了高尔夫球历史上的一段传奇故事，这也就是影片名称的由来。
